The London Deanery has launched e-learning resources to support appraisal and revalidation. They are freely available for all doctors in London including primary care, secondary care and mental health and private healthcare doctors. The resources are aimed at supporting both appraisees and appraisers by providing guidance, tips and useful information about the appraisal process. They are accessible via the   London Deanery webpage . Podcasts, webinars and one-to-one help are also being offered via the site. The online learning modules take about 45 - 60 minutes to complete and cover a range of key topics helpful for both appraisees and appraisers:  Getting the most out of your appraisal Top tips on developing your PDP Quality improvement activity for appraisal and revalidation Challenge in appraisal Calibrating supporting information in medical appraisal Tips for appraisers The modules are hosted on the BMJ learning platform, and any doctor in London is able to register

Hidden treasure: The National Library of Medicine is a remarkable book containing dozens of wonderful hidden treasures culled from the National Library of Medicine. The link offers the book in its 236-page entirety. It contains high-quality images of notable items, along with brief commentary from a range of scholars and other qualified individuals. Some of the more noteworthy items profiled here include Chinese public health slides, an atlas of skin diseases, and a rather wonderful medical trading card collection.

The ICH Library has purchased 5 new Trust computers and a new printer for the reading room. The computers are linked to the GOSH network and can be used by all Great Ormond Street staff, on a drop in basis. The printer allows  free printing. The computers are  Trust PCs with Microsft office 2010, and standard software. Both Endnote and Reference Managers will nbe installed on the PCs in due course

The UCL Main and Science Library will be open 24 hours from 24 September to 21 December 2012.

UpToDate is an evidence-based knowledge system authored by physicians to help clinicians make the right decisions at the point of care. Content is continually updated and is based on the latest evidence; it undergoes a rigorous editorial process & is written by a global community of 5,100 physicians, world-renowned experts in their specialties. UpToDate also includes basic patient information for c.150 medical conditions.

An official BNF app has been launched by NICE and is now available as a free download for anyone with an NHS Athens account who uses Android and iPhone smartphones or iPod touch. Users can download the app for free but will need to enter their NHS Athens details to activate the content. More information, including technical requirements is available in a NICE news bulletin. The BNF app offers access to the latest up-to-date prescribing information from the British National Formulary (BNF) at the touch of a button and allows for browsing and searching BNF content. An app for British National Formulary for Children (BNFC) is expected soon.

UCL Library Services has purchased access to BMJ Case Reports . This online journal has published over 3,500 case reports (including medical image and video cases) since its inception in 2008. All medical specialties are covered. The content of BMJ Case Reports can be accessed via the UCL ejournals list by UCL staff & students and Great Ormond Street staff.

As part of the NHS subscription to BMJ Learning, new animated learning modules are now available. The 26 Foundation Skills modules are suitable for doctors completing the foundation programme, core and specialty trainees and other members of the clinical workforce. The 35 Surgical Skills modules cover surgical techniques and procedures for ST 1 & 2 level surgical trainees. As well as detailed modules on surgical procedures, the product also includes sections on anaesthesia, suture techniques, instrument handling and guides on patient consent. BMJ Learning is an online learning resource for professionals in primary care and hospital medicine. Learning resources are based on BMJ Clinical Evidence. BMJ Best Practice is a point of care tool from BMJ Evidence Centre designed to support clinicians in their decision making from diagnosis to treatment. OvidSP databases, including Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, etc., now include access to OvidOpenAccess. This contains over 70,000 articles from about 200 peer-reviewed clinical and research journals published by Medknow Publications, as well as bibliographic citations of articles from over 1,000 journals accessible through PMC (formerly PubMed Central). This content is available free of charge via OvidSP's Basic Search screen only. OvidOpenAccess results are displayed alongside your regular OvidSP results. UCL Library Services has purchased the Global Health database archive. Global Health is a specialist international public health database for academics, researchers, public health practitioners, NGOs, policy makers, clinicians, healthcare professionals and students. The archive covers the years 1910-1972. UCL staff and students can access this database onsite, or use a UCL computer account for offsite access. GOSH staff can access the database via computers in the ICH Library.

The UCL Institute of Child health Library will be open for reference only during the Olympics and the Paralympics between 27th July-10th August and 28th August-7th September. Reference access will be available for Great Ormond Street and Institute of Child Health Library members, Monday to Sunday 8.00-22.45, using your swipecard to access the Library. Although the library will be unstaffed during this period, most of our services will still be available and supported as follows: For any enquiry please email  ich.library@ucl.ac.uk  and we will respond as soon as possible to your query The  inter-library loan service   will still be available but may be subject to delays due to transport and post disruptions. We regret to report that UCL Libraries has changed the method of linking to articles on PubMed and there is no longer an option for the UCL tab or filter. Instead of the UCL filter, you will now see an SFX link at the top right of the abstract screen in every PubMed record. When you click on the SFX button, you’ll either see a link (or links) to the full text, or a statement that the full text isn’t available. In the latter case, you can check UCL’s print holdings, and you can also check holdings in other libraries. This means that there is now no longer an option for a UCL filter. You can use UCL’s custom URL – http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?otool=iukucllib   or access it from the link on our homepage – to access the version of PubMed containing SFX links. The Historic Hospital Admission Registers Project (HHARP) is a free resource for 19th century children's hospital records, offering an insight into the health of children during this period. HHARP is a partnership between Kingston University's Centre for Local History Studies and various hospital archives in London and Glasgow. It began life in 2001 as a project to create a database of late 19th and early 20th century admissions to the Hospital for Sick Children . Subsequently, the project was expanded to include three other children's hospitals: the Evelina Hospital (now part of Guy's and St Thomas's NHS Trust); the Alexandra Hospital for Children with Hip Disease; and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow. A colour photocopier is now available at the library. The copier is only operated by card purchasable at the Issue Desk. The costs of colour copying are as follows: A4 - 35p, A3 - 70p. A black-and-white copier is also available. This can be operated by card and also accepts cash. The costs of black-and-white copying are as follows: A4 - 7p, A3 - 14p.

BMJ Best Practice is  now available for both NHS and UCL users:  http://bestpractice.bmj.com/ NHS users need to log in with their NHS Athens account and UCL users with their UCL username and password (Shibboleth login). 

The British Nursing Index is now available for NHS users via a different interface.  In order to access it please do the following:  log into MyAthens select resources > local resources you will see the link to 'ProQuest new platform' click on the link "2 databases" on the top lefthand side and then British Nursing Index to access the database in the native interface.

24 hour opening for the 2012 exam period will run from Monday 19th March to Saturday 2nd June 2012 inclusive, in the  UCL Main and Science Libraries .
